Sending messages of peace around the globe
Empower Peace holds live interactive broadcast session via internet
Schezee Zaidi
ISLAMABAD: To connect young people around the globe and build a worldwide network of high school students and teachers committed to breaking down cultural barriers and misperceptions through open dialogue using video-conferencing and the internet, Empower Peace held a live interactive broadcast session via internet at Beaconhouse, Margalla Campus, Thursday.
UN Goodwill Ambassador Salman Ahmad anchored the live session along with 300 students of the school, sending messages of peace and brotherhood across the globe.
Egyptian Ambassador Hussein Haridy was present on the occasion as guest-of-honour along with MNA Donya Aziz, principal of the Beaconhouse and other officials.
Salman Ahmad said that the live video exchange of Empower Peace programme aims to build bridges among nations of the world.
While Osama from Boston High School shared his feelings on embracing knowledge, tolerance and mutual respect for promotion of peace with his Pakistani counterparts in Urdu, Pakistan’s young ambassadors Ammar Farooque and Sara expressed their pledge that peace is the only option for a better world.
A video clip message of President General Pervez Musharraf was also broadcast live on the occasion, in which he stressed on the need for young students to share knowledge and friendship around the world for the true promotion of peace and understanding. Addressing the young students, he said that Pakistan as a modern and enlightened Islamic country seeks to bring about a climate of mutual respect and understanding with the people of the world.
The 90-minute live exchange broadcast from four cities of the world — Cairo, Islamabad, New York, and Boston — continued with sharing of views and dialogue highlighting their insight into cultures, customs and lifestyles and colourful potpourri of music and dance presented by the students.
The Egyptian ambassador said that one fundamental prerequisite for world peace is the promotion of understanding among cultures and civilisations in the world. He said that one of the basic challenges facing the world at present is to overcome the stereotyping of faiths, cultures and civilisations. He said that the Empower Peace programme could become an important instrument in this lofty and necessary endeavour.
Donya Aziz and principal of the Beaconhouse, Margalla Campus, also shared their views on the Empower Peace programme.
