Asia’s leading rock band Junoon is back with a new pioneering and ambitious audio and video release entitled “Ghoom Taana”. The song, written by Salman Ahmad, is a collaboration between Junoon and classical Indian vocalist Shubha Mudgal. The semi-autobiographical video, shot in both India and Pakistan (a first of its kind in this regard), has been directed by Saqib Malik with cinematography by Sanjay Kapoor. It features a narrative by Internationally acclaimed Indian actor Naseer-ud-Din Shah.
The video and a special documentary entitled “Building Bridges” was screened at a launch ceremony in Karachi in time for the Independence Day celebrations of Pakistan and India. The video is a short film about two neighbours, two cities, two nations, and their journey towards building bridges of Peace since their separation at Partition. Based on the true story of Salman’s family’s migration from Patiala to Lahore in 1947, the video has been shot partially in Salman’s ancestors house Haveli Namdar Khan in Patiala City and in Lahore.
Speaking at the occasion, Salman Ahmad thanked all who helped make his vision a reality on both the Pakistani and Indian side. Salman said, “The people of India and Pakistan may have lived apart for 57 years, but their common history spans 5700 years. Thus it is only natural that we overcome our disputes and work together for the benefit of the greater good of the region”. His Excellency, Mr. TCS Raghavan, Deputy High Commissioner for India in Islamabad was one of the guest speakers at the occasion and said: "Junoon is one of the most popular groups in India today, and their appeal reaches across the country from North to South. We wholeheartedly support Junoon's initiative of grass-roots peace-making through 'Ghoom Taana'." Amin Hashwani, President of Pakistan India CEO’s Business Forum said “We at PICBF are proud to be associated with Salman & Junoon’s brilliant efforts and hope to continue to support similar ventures whether in business, education, cultural exchange, and the performing arts.”
The ceremony was well attended by eminent personalities such as writer/professor Shoaib Hashmi, former Pakistan Information Minister Javed Jabbar, Director of the United Nations Information Centre Mr. Tetsuo Ohno, as well as a cross section of Karachi society and media.
The song and documentary is being launched at the Maurya Sheraton in New Delhi on Tuesday, the 10th of August by the Confederation of Indian Industry. For further information please contact Hira Sohail, Junoon's publicist.
SALMAN AHMAD
Salman Ahmad is a doctor by training and a rock musician by profession. Salman attended Aitchison College in Lahore and Tappan Zee High School in Tappan, New York (near New York City.) After graduating from high school in New York, Salman received his Medical Degree from Pakistan's prestigious King Edward Medical College. During medical school Salman joined Pakistan's first pop band, Vital Signs, who wrote the gigantic pop anthem "Dil, Dil, Pakistan". The success of “Dil, Dil, Pakistan” made Salman and the Vital Signs into overnight Pop stars. This is when Salman decided that he was going to give up his stethoscope and pick up his guitar. He left the Vital Signs in 1990 and co-founded South Asia's biggest rock band, Junoon, which has sold over 20 million albums world wide and has the distinction of being the first ever rock band to be invited to perform at the U.N. general assembly by U.N. secretary-general Kofi Annan.
In 2001 the United Nations made Salman their spokesman for HIV/AIDS awareness campaign in Pakistan. Salman localized UNAIDS "I Care, Do You", poster campaign. He's appeared on television, radio and in the print media and gone into colleges in Pakistan to hold seminars with faculty and students about HIV/AIDS awareness. On Junoon's latest album Dewaar he dedicated a very popular Junoon song "Khwaab" to highlight the scourge of HIV/AIDS.
Salman is a passionate and committed artist and social activist who recently won an award for a documentary, "Rockstar and the Mullahs" he did for the international TV channels PBS and the BBC. Junoon has won Channel [V]'s "Best International Group Award" in India and has also been the subject of a VH-1 documentary, “Islamabad Rock City” presented by Hollywood movie star Susan Sarandon. Junoon has just received the “BEST BAND” award at Pakistan’s first National Music Awards held by INDUS MUSIC. Salman is a lover of music, books, films and is also a cricket fanatic. NANDITA DAS
Acclaimed actress/activist Nandita Das believes in making a difference. She stumbled into film through the back door working in the performing arts with a special interest in issues related work. With a degree in Geography, and a Masters in Social Work from the University of Delhi, she began a career in social issues first as a member of Jan Natya Manch, a street theatre group started by Safdar Hashmi. She worked with NGOs like Ankur and Alarippu working on issues of women and children. She learnt Odissi, an Indian classical dance, and dabbled in various art forms like music, pottery, theatre and puppetry. Films are something she stumbled upon purely by chance- to her, they seemed to be an interesting medium to raise issues that were of concern. She has acted in the controversial 1996 film Fire by Deepa Mehta, and 1998’s Earth by the same, which was set in Lahore in 1947. Rather than being called an actress or an activist, Nandita sees herself as a communicator, who uses different means to communicate- from acting in films to raising her voice in support of important issues.
Nandita finds expression through 'Leapfrog'- an organization she started along with her husband, Saumya Sen, to cater to the communication needs of the social sector. Leapfrog presents issues of social relevance in a manner that is interesting and creative. The idea is to give form and content equal weightage. From the platform Nandita has directed a public service spot on Rainwater Harvesting and a series of three Public Service Ads on Education. The latest project of Leapfrog that she is involved with, is a peace initiative through underprivileged children of India and Pakistan.
Nandita Das' repertoire also includes giving talks on social issues of concern, in various social forums, conferences and universities, in the country and abroad.
“Ghoom Taana” is her first appearance in a music video.

Did you bother to read that topic carefully? The same Channel (IM) just gave the best band award to Junoon. _________________ Logic is only the beginning of wisdom, not the end... |
